On the unbeaten path, the child treads her way
Through the stormy night and trees that sway
She knows a light shines atop the highest hill
And dreams she’ll dream, till she’s had her fill

Lifetime Labor
Those birds that chirrup a sweet song
Perhaps they were born with gifts
But the Mockingbird learns tune by tune
Listening to the beauty of others
Note by note he copies and twists
Until his hard work yields a repertoire
As brilliant as the colors of autumn
On the Mountain Peak
This blanket of silence
Smothers tender feelings and hopes
But if I fail to yell
Who shall hear me?
At least the mountain echoes my thoughts
Perhaps we were both awaiting
Each other
Love’s Limits
A heart is finite
Care and worry an effort
Love measured and doled
Labor
The light vanishes
But the men toil onwards
Life is an effort
Home
Home is built on the backs of people
Each brick and mortar paid for by years
Of laboring and amassing experience and wealth
As a child I only saw a comfortable den
Not knowing all the work that came before
Taste of Success
Gluttony, the sweetest greed
When one does not stuff one full
Of candied sweets or artificial no.5
But to rejoice in a homemade dish
That has finally turned out well
For the bad chef happily consumes
The joy of success
Learning
The quickest way to learn is to taste
The bitterness of your failures
But to also find the successes of each one
An ideal piece hidden among the char
Recalling what created that miraculous feat
And finding that it is no accident at all
Retread
A second wind, a second chance
Sailing through a course I have known
The winds still harsh
But my footwork surer
Reading the stars and beginning to know
That language of warnings and blessings
I pull to port with a sail missing
But smiling instead of crying
Perspectives on Building a Home
Watching the birds dart here and there for a bit of tuft or twig, makes me lonesome to find my own home, a place of belonging. How easy it is for animals to court and make a nest. But then again, they have to remake their house every year. They must woo every year. Not even the lesser beasts have it easy.
