Summer

My mind is void of all but a pleasant haze
Of summer sun in a summer sky:
A sweet lethargy like sauna heat,
The pearl-like calls of courting birds,
Young girls with their knees bared,
Pale legs thirsting for light and warmth,
Men with their coats hung on the arm,
The thick smell of white magnolia cloying,
Daffodils with yellow faces turned aside,
Abashed by a secret, contented joy.
